By working with suppliers from various verticals—including paper, cardboard, plastic, sugar, rice, and corn—in seven Latin American countries, we identified the need for a tool adapted to the realities of the region. The maturity of these suppliers in sustainability matters varied significantly, which required a tailored approach to measure their carbon footprint and set realistic yet ambitious goals.
This first step was crucial in establishing a baseline of emissions for each supplier in the years 2022 and 2023, which not only provided clarity on their environmental impact but also allowed Grupo Modelo to visualize the critical emissions within their supply chain. With this information in hand, we began outlining a decarbonization roadmap that prioritized areas with the greatest potential for impact.
Innovation and Collaboration: Building the Future
The decarbonization process is neither linear nor simple; it requires innovation, collaboration, and a holistic approach. At Bono, we have worked hand-in-hand with Grupo Modelo to explore solutions ranging from on-site renewable energy implementation (such as solar panel installation) to purchasing renewable energy and modernizing equipment toward more efficient alternatives. We have also investigated switching to cleaner fuels and adopting hybrid or electric vehicles.
These efforts not only translate into a tangible reduction in emissions but have also enhanced supplier engagement and collaboration with Grupo Modelo's sustainability goals. Through our management dashboard, Grupo Modelo and its suppliers can monitor in real-time the sustainability maturity of each supplier, visualizing not only the continuous measurement of emissions in 2024 but also the progress and impact of the sustainable projects they have mapped and implemented. Additionally, through Bono, suppliers can set their reduction goals and map how close they are to achieving them, ensuring a proactive and results-oriented approach.
